When an accident occurs and one party decides to leave the scene, it’s considered a hit-and-run. Unfortunately, no one is immune to these often deadly accidents. Motor vehicle drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are all often victims.

Before you get out on the road, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the next steps to take in the event of a hit-and-run.

Hit-and-Run Accidents & Deaths Continue to Rise

The most recent data shows hit-and-run accidents are continuing to rise across the country. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the US recorded 2,049 deaths due to hit-and-runs in 2016, the highest number yet.

The same accident data shows that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on US roads. On average, 682,000 hit-and-run crashes have occurred each year in the US since 2006.

Steps to Take After a Hit-and-Run Accident

First, it’s critical that you make sure you’re okay and without serious injury. If you are, call for help immediately if you’re able. Next, you’ll want to follow these steps:

  1. Gather information about the other party: Write down as much information as you can remember about the driver. Were they driving a car or truck? What was the make or model? What color was the vehicle? These questions can help authorities identify the driver later on. You can also speak to witnesses if there were any nearby during your accident.
  2. Call your insurance company: In Texas, the at-fault driver’s insurance is held responsible for the damages after an accident. Unfortunately in a hit-and-run situation, you don’t have the other party’s insurance information unless they’re identified. You’ll need to contact your own insurance to file a claim.
  3. Call an attorney: Hit-and-runs are serious in Texas and punishable by law. An attorney can help you seek the necessary compensation for your injuries and property damage. At Ted B. Lyon, we can help you identify the driver in your case to pursue a legal claim. Or, we can support you as you file an insurance claim under your policy.
